Off the coast of Sri Lanka lives a colony of blue whales, the biggest creatures on Earth. They had been hunted to nearly extinction but Sri Lanka’s civil war provided them sanctuary allowed their numbers to grow to almost 10,000.

Typically, blue whales migrate enormous distances from the Equator to the North and South Poles. But for some reason the blue whales in Sri Lanka don’t seem to migrate. No one knows why. There is a deep underwater canyon off the coast and there is some speculation that the whales are able to find all they need in the area.
