Jellyfish Lake Palau
A Snorkeling Adventure
If you’re considering a trip to Palau then Jellyfish Lake may be a venue you want to consider. Leave your scuba equipment onboard the boat as the bubbles produced can harm the jellyfish. Be prepared for a short hike along a ridge trail, parts of it steep enough requiring a rope guide.
The lake is filled with millions of Golden and Moon Jellyfish. They do actually have stinging cells but they are not powerful enough to cause harm to humans. You can swim among them with just a bathing suit and bare skin and not feel anything.
The golden jellyfish have a normal migration from the west to east and then back to the west, following the day’s sun. They pay close attention to ensure they stay in the sunlight, avoiding the shade of the shores’ mangroves. The shade is home to the golden jellyfishes’ predator, the anemone.
The jellyfish live in a delicate eco-balance. It is important to enter the water clean to keep this micro eco-environment going. Make sure not to wear any sunscreen and wash any dive equipment before entering. Wear fins to reduce foot movement, create a more gentle movement through the water.
