Scuba Dive in One of the World’s Largest Man Made Caverns

Scuba diving in Missouri?, you ask. That’s crazy! Well, maybe not and it might be even cooler than you think. The Bonne Terre Mine was built in the 1860’s to mine lead. It is has an incredible seven stories. However, when the mine shut down in the 1960’s the pumps were shut down and the lower three levels flooded with ground water. It wasn’t long before the mine was converted into a tourist attraction that was perfect for scuba diving. The newly-formed lake is up to 375 feet deep at some locations and is the world’s largest freshwater dive site.

If you’re not a diver there is also a one-hour walking tour and a boat tour. Whichever way you choose to explore the caverns, keep a look-out for Bonnie – the lake’s only known fish.
