Giants of the Ocean
Manta Rays
These are truly ocean giants. They measure up to 26 feet in length and weigh as much as 3000 pounds. The chance to swim with them is truly a privilege. Not much is known about them as they cannot be kept in captivity. Few places have a tank large enough to hold them and they refuse to eat and soon die. Little is know about their reproductive habits.
It was recently determined that they belong to the family of sharks. They eat plankton, small fish, and squid. They have a docile nature and will allow a diver to take hold and ride along. However, biologists have warned that this could be dangerous to the rays as they have a fine mucous on their bodies that may be removed by the diver. The mucous protects them from bacteria and micro-organisms.
Enjoy these beautiful giants.
