Scuba Diving in a Tsunami

Rough Water Ahead

In 2004 there was a severe hurricane that hit Sri Lanka. The resulting tsunami was devastating. Imagine being in the water or worse, scuba diving under the water, when the tsunami arrives.

Your only warning is the behavior of the fish. And then the anemones are no longer moving freely with the ocean surge but flopped over to one side. And finally the wall of sediment comes at you.

A dive boat was caught in the tsunami with 13 divers, four of them impaired, in the water at the time the tsunami hit.
